Lock up the monitor – Google’s real time search Pandora’s Box
Seriously…
Just stumbled across a GREAT article over at Outspoken Media regarding real time spam on Google’s new real time search function.
As a search professional I’m always weary about new things. How they impact my workday mostly. Now I’m wary about the impacts on my kids eyes. Really? Predators via Twitter? It’s an impossible thought, but next time my kid searches for something on Runescape and comes across porn via Twitter we’re going to have an issue.
Be vigilant! How? Here’s some ways we do it in my house:
- The computer is in the office next to the kitchen with no door
- Parental controls – all accounts are password protected, I monitor what my kid is doing (knows it), and the account is locked at 9pm
- If searches are being done I’m sitting at the same desk with my laptop – guidance and spelling suggestions are needed
Read the article if you don’t take me seriously.
